Celebrate Sheffield Independents on Yorkshire Day
We’ll be celebrating Yorkshire Day this Saturday, when locals are encouraged to enjoy all that is great about our county and its culture. Sheffield independents like Mr Pickles’ Yorkshire Food Emporium are pulling out all the stops to make this a particularly memorable Yorkshire Day.
Traditionally, the date for Yorkshire Day alludes to the Battle of Minden in Germany on 1st August 1759, where the British regiments, wearing white roses in their hats, advanced against and won a victory over the French and Saxons. Later the Yorkshire Ridings Society celebrated Yorkshire Day in 1975, as a reaction to Local Government reorganising Yorkshire’s boundaries, meaning some towns were lost to surrounding counties. This year Doncaster has been chosen to fly the Yorkshire flag on behalf of the county.
Local Abbeydale Road food and drink retailer, Mr Pickles’ Yorkshire Food Emporium, is celebrating with a day of Meet the Producer sessions, informal demonstrations and free samples. Paul Widdowson, owner of Mr Pickles’ said:
As we only stock produce from Yorkshire, everyday is a Yorkshire day for us. But 1st August gives us the perfect opportunity to have a bit of a party and really celebrate what’s good about our region – the food and drink!
Our customers are really savvy when it comes to provenance. So we want to give them the opportunity to meet their favourite producers and chat to them directly about the produce sold in the shop.
We’re really pushing the boat out for Yorkshire Day – we’re decorating the shop with balloons and bunting and we’ll even have free face painting to keep the kids entertained! The producers have really got behind the event too and they’ve come up with some great ideas.
Food lovers will be able to meet their favourite local producers during the day, including:
Charlie & Ivy’s showcased by Red Plum
The Sheffield Honey Company
Khoo’s Hot Sauce
Smith Street Coffee Roasters
Sheffield Organic Growers
Locksley Distilling Co Ltd
North Union Brewing Company
Sessions will run from 10am to 6pm; tasters will be available throughout the day and, for every £5 spent in-store, customers will be entered into a prize draw to win a Yorkshire Day hamper. For more information and a full line-up of the producers attending see Mr Pickles’ blog or pop into the store at 240 Abbeydale Road, Sheffield.
