First listings website launched for Sheffield independents

Today Sheffield Unchained has pressed the ‘live’ button on the very first listings website exclusively for independents in Sheffield.

Sheffield Unchained Listings offers free listings to all independents in Sheffield and allows Sheffielders and those visiting the city to find independents on a very friendly interactive map.

Marishka Van Steenbergen, owner of Sheffield Unchained and director of multimedia production company Humbledinger, explains how SU Listings works:

“The idea is to allow anyone to find an independent from where ever they are, so they can search on a map for the closest independent to where they are standing, or they can search by categories or with keywords.

“For example, if you’re looking for an independent coffee shop near you, you can find it by searching for ‘cafes’ and all the independent coffee shops near you will appear on the map.

“Or maybe you’d like to find an independent shop to buy a card or some clothes, you can search for it via the category search and all relevant shops will appear on the map and in a list.”

Independent Doc/Fest

Sheffield Unchained believes the site will be especially useful for events such as Sheffield’s Doc/Fest which starts this Saturday.

Marishka explained:

“Doc/Fest delegates and those visiting Sheffield will be able to find independents in the city where they can have their coffees and meals, instead of going to the obvious chains which are easier to find when you’re in a city you don’t know.”

Putting independents on the map

The inspiration for SU Listings came about when Marishka and her colleague Joe Bream were working away and became frustrated at not being able to find interesting independent restaurants or cafes.

“When we were working away in Edinburgh for a few days we only had a small amount of time to find somewhere to eat our meals, but we still didn’t want to go to any big chains.

“We spent so much time walking around the city trying to find independents and we couldn’t find anything on the internet either.

“We did eventually find an amazing little cafe and that’s when we came up with the idea of making an app and website, which would put independents on the map and make it easy for anyone to find them.”

Free SU Listings app coming soon

A free website with an interactive map is not all that Sheffield Unchained has been working on. The team are also putting the finishing touches to their SU Listings mobile app which is due to come out in July 2014.

The app will be free to download and all Sheffield independents will be listed on the app for free. They will also have the option of adding more information about themselves for a small fee, which will go on both the app and the website.

SU Listings will also enable independents to publish monthly discounts to encourage customers to use their businesses as opposed to the big chains.

As well as being able to search for and find independents, users can also rate independents, write reviews on them and suggest new independents who aren’t on SU Listings.

Sheffield Unchained, the journalistic side of the business, has also launched a rebranded website this week. They are always on the lookout for more contributors, especially now that they’ve got their hands full with SU Listings.
