99 Mary Street invites artist Dan Baldwin to exhibit in Sheffield
Tomorrow evening 99 Mary Street will open its doors for a private viewing of the limited-edition silkscreen prints by the acclaimed British artist Dan Baldwin.
The exhibition, which will open to the public on 8th November and will run until 20th November, is the first solo show of silkscreen prints and is the beginning of a tour across the UK.
Dan Baldwin, who has made over thirty-five limited-edition prints since 2005, said the exhibition is separate to a big show of his paintings and ceramics because he believes print is important for an artist.
“The earliest piece in this exhibition is from my Los Angeles show of 2009, Hope In Hell, which is a bit of a battleground scene. The latest print is Faith-Less, a huge silkscreen with a post apocalyptic vision of earth gone to seed.
“I make paintings every year and my publishers, CCA galleries, and I then decide which painting will be the print release. We may release two a year or more, this set of prints is what we have released for the first time together since 2011.”
Each piece in the exhibition explores concepts of mortality and beauty using a range of creativity and colour, with some pieces including gold leaf, silver leaf, varnishes, glow in the dark ink, embossing and diamond dust.
Baldwin, 40, who counts The Prodigy, Petra Ecclestone, football legend Frank Lampard and TV star Holly Willoughby among his patrons, will be attending the opening of the exhibition in Sheffield tomorrow evening.
From plumbing to international acclaim
Born in Manchester in 1972 Baldwin began an apprenticeship in plumbing when he was 17 years old.
“After a year I decided it wasn’t for me and my old art teacher at school guided me to art college, that was 23 years ago.”
He studied at the Eastbourne College of Art & Design and the Kent Institute of Art & Design, where he was commended in his first year and invited to become studio associate.
Since then he has staged critically acclaimed solo exhibitions around the world and has exhibited at art fairs in Basel, Miami, LA, Tokyo, London and New York. His work has been acquired by high profile private collectors and today has a strong international following.
“We are delighted and very honoured to be hosting Dan and his exhibition at 99 Mary Street in our home city of Sheffield. His work is incredible – each piece is deeply personal and often incorporates objects which Baldwin has been collecting since he was a child. He has a unique and extremely talented approach which explains his huge international success.”
Visitors to the exhibition will be able to purchase Baldwin’s prints as well as his new book, Dan Baldwin: 23 Years.
